Half of Gen Z Australians would rather spend three DAYS without food than four HOURS without the internet, and most believe their online presence will determine their jobs – and their love of life.

More than half of Gen Z Australians would rather go three days without food than four hours without the internet, according to a shocking new study.

The survey, which looked at new online consumer trends in Australia, as well as the US and UK, also found that the digital world has become intrinsically linked to real life during the pandemic.

Younger people, more than any other generation, overwhelmingly believe that their influence online will have a major impact on their future job prospects as well as their love life.

WP Engine – a company that powers WordPress websites and commissioned research – claims that the Covid crisis has fundamentally changed the way we think about the internet.

“The trends we have seen over the past few years have accelerated during the pandemic in ways we could never have imagined,” WP Engine’s Mark Randall told Daily Mail Australia.

“Each generational cohort has radically increased its consumption of digital channels.”

With blockages affecting billions of people around the world over the past two years, digital communication has become the only source of contact for many people, which has driven platforms like Zoom and TikTok up in popularity.

More than ever, people under 25 see their online presence as an extension of their physical selves.

The study, which surveyed 3,000 recipients, points out that even though people can survive for three days without food or water, 51% of Gen Z would start to feel unbearably “uncomfortable” without Internet access by only 4 hours.

The slightly older millennials are also obsessed with the internet, with 27% saying they can’t go more than an hour without going online.

On the other end of the spectrum, 23% of baby boomers say they can go two to six days without internet access.

“When you look at Gen Z, what’s unique about them is that they grew up in a time when the iPhone existed alongside unlimited internet,” Mr. Randall said.

“So they grew up revealing how important their brand and reputation online is – more so than other generations.

“They understand that this can affect their job postings or their dataability and what’s interesting is that over the past two years the number of personal websites for Gen Z individuals has increased by 300. %.

“So they really have a sense of personal branding online. ”

The data claims that young Australians fear that their online reputation could have a huge impact on their financial future as well as their love life.

Two-thirds of Gen Z fear their online actions, such as social media posts and past purchases, will affect future job postings.

While 53% of Gen Z and 52% of Millennials believe their online influence will play a role in their future dataability.
