Pediatric COVID vaccine, booster clinic and testing in New Canaan next week

CT DPH released updated vaccination data as of December 23 with the following data for New Canaan residents who have received at least one dose of vaccination: 5-11 years = 60.92%, 12-17 years = 100 %, 18-24 years = 100%, 25-44 years = 100%, 45-64 years = 95.17%, 65 years and over = 100%.

According to DPH data, overall 93.5% of New Canaan residents have received at least one dose and 80.01% of New Canaan residents are now fully immunized. [It is important to note DPH data for vaccination rates uses a combination of 2014 and 2019 population data so we are aware for the categories at 100% that we still have some residents who have not been vaccinated.]

A pediatric COVID-19 vaccination clinic for 5 to 11 year olds will be held on Wednesday January 5 at Vine Cottage at 77 Main Street: The registration link for the Pfizer Pediatric Clinic is here.

A parent or guardian must be present with the child and the signed parental consent form and VAMS forms for the first dose are required and attached to the SignUpGenius. Please bring completed forms to the appointment. Other pediatric vaccination clinics will be added in the coming weeks. Parents are encouraged to speak with their pediatricians to make the appropriate decision for their families.

As a reminder, the two formulations of Pfizer are a two-dose vaccine taken at least 21 days apart for children 5 years and older. Pfizer is the only vaccine approved by the US FDA for people aged 5 to 17 years old.

Due to the high demand for booster shots, our health department is planning a large booster vaccination clinic for Thursday January 6 at Irwin House in Irwin Park (848 Weed Street) and a smaller clinic on Tuesday January 4 at Vine Cottage at 77 Main Street. When registering, please indicate in the comments section of SignUpGenius your type of vaccination (Moderna, Pfizer or J&J) and please bring the required one page form completed with your blank vaccination cards at your reminder appointment. Boosters are available to anyone 16 years of age and over and it has been at least 6 months since the second dose. The registration link for the Tuesday January 4th recall clinic at Vine Cottage is here. The registration link for the reminder clinic on Thursday January 6 at Irwin Park is here.

Additional booster clinics will continue to be added in the coming weeks. Area pharmacies and Stamford Hospital also offer vaccination reminders, so please check their individual websites for the vaccination schedule.

Next week, we will continue community COVID-19 PCR testing twice a week in partnership with Waveny LifeCare Network for residents who have traveled or wish to be tested. The COVID-19 PCR test will be available (for New Canaan residents only) on Tuesday January 4 and Thursday January 6 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Irwin House in Irwin Park at 848 Weed Street.

Pre-registration is required and you must bring your insurance card, credit card, and photo ID to your exam appointment. (Your insurance may pay the SEMA4 lab fee of $ 100, but if it doesn’t, your credit card will be charged.) No visits are allowed.

The turnaround time for PCR test results is taking much longer and is now around 3-4 days due to lab volume and the results will be received by email in the SEMA4 portal, for which you will receive instructions on how to access your test appointment.

To register for the next COVID-19 PCR test Tuesday 4 January and Thursday January 6 please click on the following SignUpGenius link here.

You must complete a separate registration for each person to be tested. As a reminder, the SEMA4 laboratory requires a separate e-mail and registration for each person tested. Therefore, if your child does not have an email address, we suggest that you create a free Gmail or similar free email account for your child’s registration.

For additional testing locations in the area, you can call 2-1-1, contact your primary care provider or visit the city’s website or click here for a list of COVID-19 testing sites in our region.

There are limited rapid and free COVID-19 antigen test available during regular business hours with our health department at Vine Cottage (77 Main Street) for symptomatic New Canaan residents by appointment only. (Note: all City offices are closed on Friday December 31st for the New Year holidays.) Please note that these are not individual home test kits; these are commercial rapid test kits that should be reported to the CT DPH. Please use the following SignUpGenius link for a rapid COVID-19 antigen test with our health department for Monday January 3 and Tuesday January 4th. Register here.

Residents who have been vaccinated will now be able to access their vaccination records online via the CT WiZ public portal, a free service provided by the state of the CT DPH vaccination program. [A press release can be found here.]

Vaccinated adults and legal guardians can access official vaccination records for themselves and children under 18 using the CT WiZ public portal with ‘two-factor authentication’ to verify identity.

(Note: You will not find the case if the contact information does not match what the vaccine supplier reported to CT WIZ. If you are unable to locate your case on the portal, you can contact the immunization program DPH for online help at help desk or by calling 860-509-7929 during business hours Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
