The Power of Music (POM) smart dating app launched last month. It uses emotional algorithm technology to create a “profile” of a user based on their music library and six personality questions. The founder of the company said the goal of the app is to help ‘singles’ make meaningful connections through music and psychological compatibility, in a dating scene that prioritizes aesthetic above all.
The app accesses a user’s Apple Music or Spotify account and its algorithm determines which other users might have compatible music tastes, but it also deepens the emotional connection that users can have with particular music genres or songs.
Vihan Patel, co-founder of POM, first came up with the idea when he hosted club nights during his college days. It had become obvious to him that people behaved very differently depending on the type of night.
“It influenced what they wore, the drinks they bought and the way they interacted with each other, proving how instrumental music contributes to a person’s identity,” explained Patel. “It made me think that music clearly plays a deeper role in who we are than most think. It is a voice for emotion, and using music as a vehicle to understand emotion allows for a better understanding of others, and of course, potential mates. Matching people based on musical and psychological compatibility rather than physical attraction is the way to go in the online dating world. “
Vinylly is also based on music compatibility and takes into account a user’s streaming music data as well as their music habits to find matches. Its process begins when users link their Spotify accounts to their profile. This allows the algorithm to respond to their streaming habits to produce new matches, where users can also listen to recent songs and playlists from their matches, allowing Vinylly to become as much of a music discovery tool as it is to play. ‘love.
Vinylly founder Rachel Van Nortwick connected to music at a young age, and while initially it was about listening to loud music to challenge her parents, she also later discovered the link between music and a person’s mood, as well as how musical tastes could also drive certain personality traits.
“Talking about music is a way of saying ‘tell me who you are without telling me who you are’,” said Northwick.
Finding love through music is not much different from meeting a soul mate at a concert or in a record store – back in the days when such places still existed. With the pandemic shutting down live music, apps may have filled a particular void.
“The subject of the music dating app is an interesting one,” said technology industry analyst Charles King of Pund-IT.
“While serious musical snobbery is not that common, many or most people prefer certain styles or genres of music,” King explained. “So partnering up with someone who likes the same or similar music is similar to sharing any other interest or hobby – a good icebreaker and a basic compatibility indication.
