Cohoes launches expanded recycling program and new 65 gallon carts for residents

COHOES, NY (NEWS10) – Cohoes has launched a new recycling program and recycling education programs. The city has announced that it will distribute 4,500 new recycling carts in early November to residents.

Cohoes will provide residents with 65 gallon lidded recycling carts on wheels to replace the existing 14 gallon open bins. The bins will be delivered to households with an information pack on what is recycled and not recycled. Information on recycling is also available on the city’s website.

“These little blue bins just aren’t big enough for the job,” said Steve Hennessey, commissioner of the Cohoes Department of Public Works. “We are confident that residents will recycle a lot more once they get these big new carts. They will no longer have to worry about overflowing trash cans.

The city is asking residents to do their part by placing items accepted for recycling in their carts, including glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, cartons of food and drink, plastic products. paper and empty plastic bottles and containers. Residents are reminded to rinse food and beverage containers before placing them in carts.

“Once residents receive their new recycling carts, they can reuse their blue bin for different purposes or drop it in their new cart for recycling, but they can’t fill it with recyclables for curbside pickup. street, ”said Kathleen LaBombard, who is coordinating the outreach and education program. “It’s only the carts from November.”

Each recycling cart will be assigned an address and can be identified with an identification label. If a cart is lost or stolen, residents can contact the Department of Public Works at 518-233-2130 for assistance in locating or replacing the missing cart.

This program is part of the city’s Cleaner Greener Cohoes initiative. This new recycling program was funded by a $ 130,000 grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation and a $ 72,000 grant from The Recycling Partnership.
